Mat or reformer?
Mat pilates uses your body weight and small props and is the cheapest way to start; many gyms include it in group-class memberships. Reformer pilates uses a sprung carriage that adds resistance and support, which is why physios recommend it for backs, posture and postnatal recovery. Reformer classes are small (usually 4–8 people) and priced per class or in packs.
Where the studios are
- Madinat Qaboos, Shatti Al Qurum and Qurum – the main cluster of reformer studios.
- Al Mouj and Al Hail – newer studios, several women-only.
- Bawshar and Azaiba – ladies-only yoga and pilates studios, plus pilates inside private PT studios.
What to check
- Instructor certification. Reformer teaching needs specific training (BASI, STOTT, Polestar, Balanced Body or similar). Ask.
- Class size. More than 8 on reformers means less correction.
- Beginner classes. Jumping into an intermediate reformer class is the fastest way to decide pilates isn't for you.
- Women-only. Several Muscat studios are ladies-only; others run ladies-only sessions. Filter by the Ladies badge.
- Prenatal and postnatal. Only with an instructor certified for it and your doctor's approval.
Prices
Single reformer classes in Muscat are usually priced in the mid-teens of rials, with packs of 8–10 classes bringing the per-class price down. Mat classes are cheaper. Confirm current prices with the studio.
