Where the gyms are
Muscat is a long, thin city and traffic on Sultan Qaboos Street decides most people's choice. The main clusters are:
- Al Khuwair and Al Ghubrah – the densest stretch, with commercial gyms, 24-hour gyms and several ladies-only options within a few minutes of each other.
- Al Azaiba and Al Mouj (The Wave) – newer, residential, with private studios and compound gyms; popular with families and people who want to train before work.
- Madinat Qaboos and Shatti Al Qurum – the embassy belt; boutique studios, pilates and personal training rather than big-box gyms.
- Qurum and Bawshar – mid-size gyms and hotel gyms with day passes.
- Seeb, Al Hail and Al Mawaleh – fast-growing, with budget gyms and large chains following the new housing.
- Ruwi and Muttrah – older commercial gyms, usually the cheapest in the city.
Types of gym in Muscat
Commercial gyms sell monthly or annual memberships and work on volume. You get machines, free weights and classes, and you train on your own. Ladies-only gyms are fully separate facilities with female staff; many mixed gyms also run ladies-only hours, usually in the morning. Private personal training studios are by appointment only: you book a session with a coach and the studio is yours for that hour. They cost more per visit but you are never training alone. Specialist studios cover pilates (mat and reformer), yoga, CrossFit and boxing.
What gyms cost in Muscat
Prices change often, so treat these as a guide and confirm with the gym. Budget commercial gyms in Seeb and Ruwi start at roughly 20–30 OMR a month. Mid-range gyms in Al Khuwair, Qurum and Azaiba are typically 35–60 OMR a month, and annual plans bring that down. Boutique studios and hotel gyms sit above that. One-to-one personal training is priced per session or per package rather than per month; the personal trainer prices page shows what studios and coaches currently list.
How to choose
- Pick the area first. If the drive takes 25 minutes you will stop going by month two.
- Match the gym to your goal. General fitness and cardio: a commercial gym is fine. Weight loss, strength or rehab after injury: a coach gets results faster than a membership card.
- Ask about ladies' hours and separate floors if that matters to you; it varies a lot between gyms.
- Check the real opening hours. "24 hours" sometimes means key-card access with no staff.
- Try before you commit. Most gyms offer a day pass; private studios usually offer a free first consultation.
Ladies-only options
Muscat has more women-only facilities than most GCC cities. They range from large ladies-only gyms with classes to private studios with female coaches. See ladies gyms in Muscat for the full list.

Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest gym in Muscat?
Budget commercial gyms in Seeb, Al Hail and Ruwi generally start at around 20–30 OMR a month, with annual plans cheaper per month. Prices change, so confirm with the gym before joining.
Are there 24-hour gyms in Muscat?
Yes. Several gyms in Al Khuwair, Al Ghubrah and Seeb offer 24-hour access, usually by key card outside staffed hours. Check whether classes and ladies' hours are included.
Are there ladies-only gyms in Muscat?
Yes. Muscat has dedicated ladies-only gyms and private studios with female coaches, and many mixed gyms run ladies-only morning sessions. See the ladies gyms list for areas and hours.
Is a gym membership or a personal trainer better?
A membership suits people who already know how to train and just need the equipment. A personal trainer suits specific goals (weight loss, strength, injury recovery) or anyone who struggles to stay consistent on their own.
Do Muscat gyms offer day passes?
Most commercial and hotel gyms sell a day pass or a trial week. Private studios usually offer a free first consultation instead.
